Just to let people know who might not. If none of the work arounds here seem to help you particular computer. You can always type "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" Go to the this line in the document:
"kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=048896bf-abae-4771-82cf-53eff300fe28 ro quiet splash"
Erase the word splash then save the document.
This will allow Ubuntu to boot without a splash screen at all. It will show boot text instead. Not as aesthetically pleasing perhaps but it works.
