I've tested totem on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) / Baltix 3.0 final - it seems this problem exists only with totem-xine packages, totem-gstreamer doesn't change contrast. Same results with Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty).
Please fix it, other distros, for example, Fedora, doesn't have this annoying problem.
