I have a similar problem. I am using Intel ICH7
kernel seems ramdonly freeze. When any process open a file or some ting, kernel output: ata1: port failed to respond (30secs, Status 0xd0)

after a while, it works again.

i tried to compile the 2.6.20 kernel source from kernel.org, the problem still remains
