No GUI-based group management feature beginning 12.04.

to have again users and groups as before

While I was rather frustrated with the fact there was no ACL-based feature within Ubuntu/Linux to allow certain users to have certain access to folders, I worked around it with the group feature. In a perfect world, I would be able to say "Bob, Jim, Frank, read+write access to /media/public", but I cannot do that because there is no ACL based feature. (Hate to say it, but see OSX "get info" for an idea). To work around it, I've just created a new group and added Bob, Jim, and Frank to that group, then added that group to /media/public or whichever folder I'm targeting.

It seems as if that functionality has been removed in 12.04.... really? Why would we remove needed features such as this from the GUI that was just fine the way it was?

In closing - I'd really like to see that group management feature back. Several users I've spoken to just within the last 15 minutes alone have shared similar frustration. It was so easy to use... But in a perfect world, the ACL idea would be nothing short of amazing to see...

Thank you for your bug report, that's a duplicate of a wontfixed bug basically but I don't want to spend time looking for numbers now, should be closed though, upstream basically rejected changing the tools to a sysadmin one, it's supposed to be a simple one for desktop users, sysadmin can get more powerful tools if needed

Sorry, but this is a GNOME feature and the Ubuntu Desktop Team is currently not interested in trying to hack something else together.

* Home or small business users will generally be ok with just setting some accounts as Standard and others as Administrator. This is far easier with System Settings (gnome-control-center) in Ubuntu 11.10 and higher.
* Those that want more fine-grained control should look into tools that offer that, such as useradd -G, /etc/sudoers.d/ or policykit.
* users-admin, the tool available in earlier versions of Ubuntu is still available for install. Honestly, it's not really being maintained but it probably still mostly works.

It's really a sad state of affairs that this bug reveals. The Linux community seems to be disintegrating, each clan blaming the others for whatever. Ubuntu looked like a viable alternative to the big guys, but with flat-out failures like this one, it's beginning to look doomed.

Forget clannishness: customers want a comprehensive, working, graphical solution. Period.

Bug management is another issue: how come GNOME bugs aren't just another department of this bugzilla? Why isn't there a simple way to transfer the "bug" to the proper bug management system?
