I loved the suggestion of an Oxygen-style app button menu! Fenryxo's mock-ups are simple but wonderful. This would make Ubuntu's global/app-menu centuries ahead of OS X's global menu.
I think this would solve almost every single issue users has with the current global menu while retaining all of it's advantages, plus having an increased discoverability (since it would not exactly be hidden, it would be indicated by a window button). It could also have the option of being customized for showing on hover or upon clicking according to need.
By the way, there is another bug report filed to this bug. Check bug # 900418.
