A solution I have been thinking about to this problem is to have dynamic ordering of applications on the launcher starting with the most recently used application (similar to Alt+Tab). At first this might feel a bit strange but it would make sense as you would know exactly where to start looking for the app you most probably want to switch to.

ALL running apps should appear at the top of the launcher (but under the dash button) in order of most recently used. Favourite apps should appear beneath running apps. If a favourite app is opened it will move from its favourite position to the running apps section. eg.
