I must say I prefer unity with package from comment 60 and these options:

gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/metacity/general/focus_mode mouse
gconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/metacity/general/auto_raise false

Package without these changes or changes without the package make no sense, but together they are great (imho).
