This is still an issue with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). You can easily reproduce doing the following:
1. Enable Assistive Technology
2. logout and login
3. Open nautilus and choose list view
4. Navigate to the folder "/usr/lib"
5. See how long it takes (it becomes unresponsible for some time)
6. Deaktivate Assistive Technology
7. logout and login
8. Do as in step 3 + 4
9. Feel the difference
