In 0.C1 and before, holding the waypoint hotkey (usually Z) while the unit is moving will show a rectangle with 1 cursor frame of the command that was given to that unit. If it's attack-moving, the attack-move frame of the mouse cursor will be shown. If it's on a mission to area-guard the selected spot, area-guard frame will be shown. If it's moving or attacking, no rectangle is shown.

In 17.139.1131, this rectangle will also go through the the beacon frames (animating the beacon) from the .shp file containing the beacon while the waypoint hotkey is being hold. If attack-move or area-guard is also being held while holding the waypoint hotkey, the game appears to increase the speed of animation of the beacon frames, and also go through the attack-move or area-guard frames respectively (or at least their 1st frames).

So, in short: it looks like the game puts into that rectangle the normal cursor for the command given to the unit, plus whatever mouse cursor is currently active, plus the beacon animation.
