OK, this gets weirder: this problem goes away for me if I use a "vanilla" kernel.org kernel rather than the one from Fedora. Specifically:

  kernel.org 2.6.34.1 -- fine;
  kernel-2.6.34.1-29.fc13.x86_64 -- results in the bug.

I have attached the .config I have been using for the vanilla kernel.
