I came to this thread because I'm really annoyed by an add-on to Thunderbird, named Gnome Integration, that displays a bubble every time I receive a email, using notify-send that stays on my screen for not less than 10 seconds.

Well that's ok if it's just one email but, when I first start my computer every morning, there are always tens or hundreds of emails waiting to be downloaded by Thunderbird. Every single email creates a bubble and they are displayed in sequence for 10 seconds each one. Sum that up and you'll have an idea of my ordeal. It's common that I finish scanning the whole lot of emails and switch to something else before all the bubbles are gone.

The add-on has a configuration gui and one of its options is the time out. I was getting annoyed that whatever the amount of time I set there, there was no change in behaviour and I started googling for a solution. That's how I came across this bug report.

It makes me sad that no interest is shown by the Ubuntu team to either tackle this issue or, at least, give us (users and developers alike) a feasible alternative to get what we want/need.

I went through this hole thread looking for an easy solution for my issue and the only one I could find was a patch to notify-osd to allow setting different time outs. The problem with that is that, although I'm a developer for other platforms, I don't have the smallest clue as how to apply the patch and recompile the package. So, I think my only solution is to disable (or uninstall?) the add-on until there's a solution to this or until I find another add-on that does the same as Gnome Integration without using notify-osd.
