The description of bug:550625 is not really the same - there, the gnome-config "Trackpad" tab is showing, but doesn't work. In contrast, on my system I don't see a "Trackpad" tab at all.
Nevertheless, I patched psmouse.ko as described in http://confluence.nau.edu/display/~<email address hidden>/Recognize+ALPS+Touchpad+on+Dell+E6510+in+Ubuntu
although it says "Dell Latitude E651" and I have a "Dell Precision M4500" - but I thought they might be the same.
The result is, after restarting the X server, I now see the "Trackpad" tab but it doesn't work, much like described in bug:550625

A small step in the right direction maybe?
