Bug Description

Binary package hint: aptoncd

Hi,

Would it be possible to add some synaptic-like features to aptoncd, so that it doesn't just list packages in your cache but can actually look for a package in the repositories, download it and its dependencies and add it to the list of packages available for copying to the CD?

Thanks.

I'm answering some guy's doubt in a forum, and he could really use this kind of functionality. This is the address:

http://www.elotrolado.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=813473

It's in Spanish, but basically it's a newbie who hasn't Internet in one of his computers, and wants to download a program from another to install it on that computer without internet. He's trying to get it from http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=kmplayer&searchon=names&subword=1&version=dapper&release=all through his browser -which should make sense to a newbie- but complains about dependency hell.

I'd like to point him to aptonCD as the solution to his problems, but he would still have to fire up Synaptic and install the program in his first PC, which he might not want to do. Then hope that that specific program doesn't have any dependencies that he might have installed but not in the cache.

Overall, I think it makes a fine user case. He needs something to access the repos for him and fetch the desired package and its dependencies for a clean ubuntu system, then copy them to the CD / ISO image. I think it's a job for aptonCD.

We will have this kind of functionality in the version 0.2 of APTonCD.
We are working in an integration with synaptic to download packages as synaptic does it very well for now, so we think that's an integration is the best solution and will make things work as expected because synaptic already does that very well.

We are making a lot of improvements to APTonCD and a lot of news is coming soon.

Please, wait for the new version, from now you can still doing it manually using synaptic to get the packages to your cache.

Thank you for your comments.

Hi,

I found myself in the same situation, two years later. 0.2 still isn't out, are there any plans to do this someday?

Thanks in advance.

Already reported upstream. Nothing will be done in Ubuntu only, so marking as won't fix for Ubuntu.
