I applied the patch and succeeded in getting sound with the ALC268 codec . It seems that the presence of headphones does not mute the speakers, I may have applied the patch incorrectly or consider this a tangential bug report. To the extent it may be useful to fellow novices I added the steps I followed to Mat's thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3000405#post3000405 -- if anyone has insight into the headphone issue a follow-up to that post would be very welcome.
