On Android, in Thunderbird, OS X Mail, probably Outlook etc, it is possible to import and export contacts with .vcf or .csv files. There really should be an import and export function to make it possible to not use Google's cloud services (adware, spyware, whatever you call it) and still be able to not have to retype all your contacts.

I am using OTA 11 on Bq M10 FHD with Norwegian localisation.
