I am also unable to enter a date directly in the date fields, but maybe the only way to enter a date is by using the date picker (which isn't working, as is described above).

Also, it would probably be better if the option "From ... To ..." were checked automatically when entering/selecting a date, so without having to check the option explicitly: if you are entering/selecting a date your are probable going to use that option.
