My two cents:

I have the same black screen after resuming with an Intel Arrandale (i5) chipset using Compiz. System is not frozen, it's just the screen not coming back to live.

I've tried many things proposed in this and other threads, notably:

- upgrading the kernel to 2.6.39.0
- applying a patch to the intel xorg driver found in the xorg's bugtracker
- disable sync to vblank in Compiz OpenGL settings

The only one that has consistently worked is disabled sync to vblank. Not a single black screens in weeks. None of the others has been a final solution.
