have same bug (screen freezes), can reproduce on every libreoffice start.
sync_to_vblank or 2.6.39-0 kernel not works for me.
Downgrade of compiz (http://www.webupd8.org/2011/05/how-to-downgrade-to-compiz-086-in.html) works perfect (but it remove Unity).
