Tried that, and my machine fell back to VESA, meaning 2D Unity only, as ugly as Unity was when it first appeared.
Re-activated the nVidia driver, and de-activated it again, and on the next boot, behold Nouveau. And I notice my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has disappeared.
I'm not going to bother any longer with the nVidia drivers, Nouveau works fine for my purposes.
