The problem also occurs with empathy using google talk, *and* it occurs with a separate USB mic (that is: the separate USB mic works fine in Sound Recorder but is unhearably quiet when using skype, mumble, and empathy); I suppose it's possible that skype, mumble, and empathy all do the same input-level tweaking, but I can't find anything obvious in all three apps which suggests that they're doing so? I am most baffled.
