Are you able to boot into a previous kernel and then upgrade your packages? Some large graphics changes went into 2.6.32-16, and the latest plymouth package has many bug fixes. It may not be a bad idea to just remove plymouth if none of that solves your issues. It still has some bugs that may keep you from booting correctly
