GonzO, I've been telling people to stop adding unrelated things in comments to this bug, but most people don't seem to care.

I would appreciate it if a developer would respond to this issue, and at least tell us if nothing is going to be done. I doubt that it is possible to disable pango in Firefox by default, since it helps with language support, but it consistently makes firefox much slower, as can be seen in the comments here, and breaks MathML (see bug 19066). But since Xgl isn't default in dapper, would it be possible to disable cairo, if this would help? In addition, it would be nice to have an option to disable pango that was automatic or discoverable, since most people would just think that Firefox is really slow rather than go searching for possible problems like this. Could MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO be set/unset depending upon what language support packages are installed/locales are generated? While language support is an important part of Ubuntu, does that mean we should cause major problems like these for its sake?
