For the record, ed-ong means adding this line to the interface in /etc/network/interfaces:
pre-up sleep 10
This works for me too. I cannot tell there is a delay during startup, so it is a pretty good workaround. But I feel there should be a better solution to this (and it should be enabled by default.)
