I'm also finding when running glxgears, that nothing at all comes up (no window with gears and no output in terminal), UNTIL i ctrl-c and it quits. It reports ~16.000 FPS but actually does nothing on screen.
The suggested work-arounds above (changing re-fresh rate) does nothing for me.
This is a show stopper! Unity is going OUT! and perhaps ubuntu is too ... back to Mint for me
