defects in some parts of the screen with ATI Radeon 8500 and DVI

With Compiz-Fusion enabled in Gutsy beta, the display shows defects in some parts of the screen (specially the right side in my case)

The defect affects windows that are moved to this part of the screen (tested with firefox 2 and OOo)

I have an ATI Radeon 8500 OEM video card with defaut drivers (free drivers)

Altough I couldn't get desktop-effects to run at first (due to _unrelated_ Bug #123712 and Bug #123712), I managed to get it to start after:

-- manually changing xorg.conf DefaultDepth to 16 (it's a pitty displayconfig-gtk doesn't allow to change bitdepth);
-- unloading and loading radeon module (sudo rmmod radeon && sudo modprobe radeon);
-- using `SKIP_CHECKS compiz --replace`;

but I got the same symptoms as the original reporter.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A REGRESSION! Compiz worked flawlessly at 16bpp in Feisty (with glxinfo -l reporting the same (1024) MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE).

My card is an ATI Radeon M7 (Radeon 7500):

This seems to have been fixed, at least to some extension, in the final release.
Now if I use 'SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz --replace', compiz throws the same errors, but starts ok. I still need to unload / reload radeon, and manually edit xorg.conf for 16bpp.

For what it's worth, i don't have this bug with Metacity Composite enabled under hardy alpha 5 LiveCD ($gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true)
I've read that Metacity uses XRender when Compiz uses OpenGL

Right, the problem is we should not be allowing compiz to run on your machine but your video card lies to us about what it supports.

Your screen resolution is larger than the maximum texture size your video card can create. Thus it cannot extend your panels, desktop, or large windows along the entire screen.

hu... the bug i have is small defects on the screen which is entirely drawn (see screenshots above)

Oh, you're right, I had your bug confused with another one. Reassigning to the ati driver, compiz doesn't do anything that would cause those weird defects.

please note that, considering that bug, i switched to metacity composite (xrender) which doesn't show that bug.
i've just switched again to compiz fusion for the need of that report so maybe the file will show that

I also own an ATI Radeon 8500. I had the same kind of bugs with compiz enabled in Feisty and Gutsy. Everything was solved when I changed my CRT screen. The problem came from the VGA connection : with a LCD and a DVI connection, there were no more defects (but still with LCD and VGA connection).
