Bug Description

To reproudce boot a Febuaray second alternate installer from zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily/20150202/vivid-alternate-i386.iso.zsync
and then in a kvm virtual machien try to isntall the packages. continue installling to the entire disk. IT proceedes until you intput the base system and then enter any http:// proxy information then turns red as a failed install and can procede no further. Since this is only in a busybox shell ubuntu-bug or apport is not avialable and results in command not found.

This is with kernel 3.18.0.-12-generic #13ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 29 04:34:45 UTC 2015 i686 GNU/Linux

I expected the installer to finish. Instead it stopped and did not install packages

Is there ANY alternate image that does not have this problem?

Also, I have a sneaking suspicion this is somehow related:

The latest images have a fix for the lxpanel so this should be marked as a duplicate of bug 1417244

i noticed that all mentions of this came before lxpanel was fixed. another possibility is that lxpanel was the thing causing problems.
could you check with a version ≥ 20150204 for vivid daily.

making this incomplete because if it is related to the lxpanel fix, then it's ultimately invalid.

Indeed just saw that bug report, invalid eventually, I can test again but
only later today, we have 2 am here already xD so I would guess I can
return to it after sleep and work, probably in around 15 hours, but I guess
that would be rather late for the alt build!?

This same error occurs in the Trusty 14.04.2 test of the alternate-i386 ISO.

I get a red failure screen with the error:

[!!] Select and install software

Installation step failed

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and install software

Have attached screenshot of failure. Fails on tasksel

tasksel: aptitude failed (100)

and then

WARNING **: Menu item 'pkgsel' failed.

Trying to repeat the step fails. If this step is skipped, the system installs without a visible GUI, but there is still a minimal system from the console.

I just made it beyond the point where it skipped components/ failed
complete installation before which was at around 16 %, it now seems to
progress normally and fetches the usual stuff. So far it seems the
alternate ppc image of vivid daily is working again. :)

Ok I can confirm with vivid daily ppc alternate 20150205 installation is
working again and things seem to be in order.

I seem to be missing that system overview information tool/ application,
but I do not know if this possibly is an intentional change or incomplete
state (with vivid?), I just mention it because it came in handy before in
general which is why I notice it not being there now aside from that
nothing crucial appears to be missing.

Had to use *Linux **video**=TV-1:**d* as a nvidia 5200 pcix workaround,
software rendering, on that particular G5 PowerMac but that is to be
expected and not related to the manifest et al issues mentioned before.
