Bug Description

# Nvidia Proprietary driver (any version from my testing) removes the transparent rectangle behind the text on desktop icons and also makes the text bold.

This is how the text appears after installing Nvidia Proprietary Drivers:

And this is how they should be shown***:

***This image also contains a bug found on Bug 1271891, but shows the correct Text style and proper semi transparent rectangle.

Reverting to the Open Source Nvidia Driver does not correct the problem, it will stay permanently like that. Reseting XFCE4 to it's defaults will also make no effect.

The desktop labels are meant to be full transparent and the font is bold to make the text readable on most backgrounds. This appearance is set by the default Xubuntu theme "Greybird".
However, due to bug 1270261 the desktop elements might look different (not properly themed like seen in the 2nd screenshot).

Same problem with default drivers. 14.04 daily build march 31. Nvidia GPU
When in live mode desktop icon labels are transparent, after install on every boot labels appear with white background.
Only way to remove is changing the style in appearance then back to Greybird; however after reboot the problem returns.

Sergio Schneider, the initial bug reporter does not want the desktop icon labels to be transparent. Please read comment #2 and add a comment to the linked report if you can still reproduce the problem.

Other than that, the colors of the text and background can be customized by editing ~/.gtkrc-2.0:
