According to comments, this is the case for:
- Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04
- LibreOffice cycles 3.6 and 4.0

I have seen problems with the menus in LibreOffice as well - there were no menus in the top bar and no commands showing up in the HUD. I followed the suggestion on Bug #1061225 to install the "lo-menu" package and that restored the menu to the top bar but still no change to the HUD.

Are the two issues unrelated? And why is the lo-menu package not installed by default? (I have a fresh install of 12.10 Beta 2)

I just tried Writer from a daily build live USB. Same result, I'm afraid
the problem remains.

BUT: I just found that the HUD stops working in Writer whenever I open the
formula editor. It does not work in the equation editor itself, and also
stops working in the main Writer window after formula editing is finished.

This behaviour seems to be reproducible, maybe this is of some help.

I just get results from the indicators, even though the first HUD icon that appears is the right LO one.

LibreOffice is probably the only app that makes me want to use the HUD because of its extended menus and diverse functions.

How come no one is looking into it? Is the problem in Raring too?

+1 for #38 ; this is what I get as well (on Raring, upgrade through 12.04 > 12.10 > 13.04 )

If you start LibreOffice by opening a document from Nautilus, or from picking a file in the dash, the first window does not get HUD integration.

If you start the app "raw" without opening a file, HUD integration works just fine.

Subsequent LibreOffice windows get HUD integration regardless of how you start them ; so if you open a text document, and then a spreadsheet, the document has no HUD, but the spreadsheet does.

If you close all windows, the problem recurs with the next window opened.

Same as #43. This bug is consistent for me. When I start Writer or Calc I can search the menus with Alt. But as soon as I edit this blank document and I try to do the menu search again I can actually see the commands of Writer for a second, but then they immeadiately dissapear and I'm not able to search in the menus anymore. Only the commands from tray apps are appearing.
When opening a document from nautilus or dash I'm able to use the HUD with .docx files in Writer, but again until I make any changes in the document. The HUD is not working at all with odt, doc, ods, xls and xlsx files no matter if I'm opening from dash or nautilus.

Laura Dijkhuizen (laura-dijkhuizen) wrote :

Your argument seems plausible. However, in my case and several others the HUD and libreoffice actually do communicate. But only in a "fresh instance" of libreoffice in which no document has been opened or created.

Let me explain with an example: I launch libreoffice writer from the launcher, wait serveral seconds, bring up the HUD and start typing. For example "recent thesis" to open my file thesis.odt which is listed in "Recent Documents" in the "File" menu. The HUD shows all options in the libreoffice menus as would be expected, no bug noticed so far.
However, once the file is opened the HUD does not work anymore.

Therefore I assume that (even though I agree the ubuntu HUD isn't very stable) this particular bug is in LibreOffice. After all, it is a change in libreoffice that makes the HUD not work properly.
