Can "make uninstall" be more thorough?

Bug Description
"make uninstall" appears to delete all files, but not the directory structure. More oddly, it also leaves any symlinks for dynamic libraries, which means those symlinks are dangling.
We should investigate to see if there are any CMake features that would allow this to be more thorough.
