split ill performs

Bug Description
When I copied Listing 1 from site https:/
I get output as
split: extra operand ‘text1’
Try 'split --help' for more information.
split: extra operand ‘text2’
Try 'split --help' for more information.
text1 text2 text3
While, when I typed same command by myself i.e "split -l 2 text1". It didn't show any error.
However the tutorial says it splits text1 into 2 files but i get only 1 file.
