panel background of showtime isn't flexible enough

That's true, there's a problem if you use vertical panel. There's no solution to this because panel use an image as background... you can try to make a rotation of this image: /usr/share/themes/showtime/gtk-2.0/panels/panel-bg.png

For the repeating horizontal bars. There's an easy solution. What's the size of your panel? You can use the following size
24 pixels, 28 pixels, 32 pixels, 40 pixels, 48 pixels.
Then modify /usr/share/themes/showtime/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
on line 17 replace
include "panel.rc"
by (if you use 32 pixels size)
include "panel32.rc"
