Bug Description

The following has been tried on several mp4 video files
(downloaded from youtube via the "download-helper" plugin).

1. Nautilus:

Right clicking on the file and going to "properties" results in a message:
"Creating Properties Window..." and nothing happens after that.

PcmanFM on the other hand has no trouble displaying the file's properties.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Totem:

Doesn't play the file. When running in terminal I get:

"""
(totem:5491): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: Read/writable property 'object' on class 'ZeitgeistDpPlugin' has type 'TotemObject' which is not exactly equal to the type 'GObject' of the property on the interface 'PeasActivatable'
"""

VLC on the other hand has no trouble playing the file.

Probably a codec issue, I can see the same problem with AVC encoded files:

* nautilus - displays window with "Creating Properties window." this window will never finish, tough you can still browsing files.

Nautilus probably already knows it is a MPEG4 file ("file" will say "ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, version 2"),
properties window functionality is totally lost,
Should display something like "MPEG file, could not identify codec" but still complete the operation.

---------Other players/tools identified the file format -----------
* banshee/totem will not play the files.
* mediainfo
 MPEG-4 (Base Media/Version 2)
 1 Video stream: AVC
 1 Audio stream: AAC

* mplayer - played it:
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
libavcodec version 53.35.0 (external)
Mismatching header version 53.32.2
Selected video codec: [ffh264] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg H.264)
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg/libavcodec audio decoders
AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 109.1 kbit/7.73% (ratio: 13641->176400)
Selected audio codec: [ffaac] afm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg AAC (MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Audio))
==========================================================================

* vlc - played it
Video Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(avc1)
Audio Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

Thanks

summary: - nautilus can't create properties window and totem can't play certain
- files
+ nautilus can't create properties window for files with unknown codec

in the properties window of totem, it shows the video as 0x0 dimensions. It happens only on some mp4 files.

Affects me too. Not a thumbnail issue; like others, Totem won't play affected files, but other players successfully do.

Really is a bad plugin issue
Won't dupe to my bug on because no one pays it any attention anyway. (Bug 973014
If the bad plugin was patched & rebuilt all would be fine
When Debian/Ubuntu go to the 1.0 version of gstreamer this will go away, as far as 12.04 you all may be SOL as far as an official fix.

Changed in gst-plugins-bad:
importance: Unknown → Medium
status: Unknown → Fix Released

I have exactly the same problem, which has happened after the update to ubuntu 12.04
I can't see the property of the file .mp4 : choosing properties opens a windows "creating properties".
Totem is unable to read file.mp4
After recoding file.mp4 via handbrake, one can see the properties of the new files (file.m4v and file.mkv).

I did not have this problem with my old install of 12.04 (which got upgraded to 12.04.1 64bit). However, after a fresh install today (12.04.1 64bit), I have this bug. And I now have this bug for a mp4 file which did not cause any problems on the old install. It' still the very same, unchanged mp4 file.
