useless error message on broken download

Bug Description
This morning zc.buildout gave me this error:
Processing s4u.site-4.0.tar.gz
error: None
An error occurred when trying to install s4u.site 4.0. Look above this message for any errors that were output by easy_install.
While:
Installing tools.
Getting distribution for 's4u.site==4.0'.
Error: Couldn't install: s4u.site 4.0
There was no hint anywhere what the error was. It took me ages to try to manually reproduce what buildout is doing to figure out the root cause: the .tar.gz it downloaded was broken.
It would be extremely helpful if buildout could provide an informational error message. "error: None" is not particularly helpful.
