Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

The version of GDM and its default theme in 9.10 preview features a tiny white progress bar that is shown both before login, and against for another ~15 seconds after login.

It is unclear what GDM is doing for all of this time as the background is already drawn, and after the white bar disappears for the second time, the main desktop has is not even rendered.

The lack of obvious activity gives the impression of this section of the boot-up sequence being slower than in previous releases.

Ideally GDM should provide some indication of genuinely active activity (or just display the bar immediately.

In previous releases, the busy mouse cursor has used, and this at least allowed the user to *feel* that they could interact with the computer as the mouse movement during this period was still instantaneous (even if nothing could be clicked).
