Binary package hint: compiz
10.10 live DVD boots up and (I think) runs and acts like it thinks it is displaying the desktop, but it doesn't display. Mouse pointer is displayed over the last of the bootup message text.
If before booting, I select F6-nomodeset it comes up and runs reasonably. There are problems (e.g. firefox window is black on black) until I turn off all desktop (3D) effects (they were on medium).
This would appear to be a driver problem. It thinks it is displaying, but it is not. The attached lspci.txt shows the display card as ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1 |

Both DVD's were read verified before running these tests.
