Bug Description

After ugrading my test distro from Feisty to Gutsy I got the black screen syndrom after the boot sequence : no way to access a console for fix ! ; I tried both "ati" and "radeon" drivers that both failed (they work on Feisty) ; I changed driver to "vesa" in xorg.cong and rebooteed successfully ; than I used the restricted driver feature that installed driver "fglrx" that seems to work but we need a fix for free drivers.

Thanks for the report. Is this still valid or can we close it?

Sorry for being late in answering you question :
This driver is still buggy whatever "ati" or "radeon" setting I use in "xorg.conf" :
- without "compiz" it slows down reaction of desktop,
- with "compiz" it crashes KDE session.

Consequently I have to go back for "fglrx" driver (8.37.6) not working with GoogleEath but working well with "compiz".

Tormod :
(1) is free driver known to work with some Atir Radeon cards (mine is (X 300 PCI Express) ?
(2) when can we expect Catalyst new ATI drivers to be packaged for Ubuntu.
Thanks.

Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

The free "ati" driver is supposed to work on X300.

Tormod,
I have to back-up on my statement because installation is misleading ; I investigated the bug on Internet and found the fix ; I had to remove the package xserver-xgl though not described by the installator as incompatible with driver "radeon" as provided with package xserver-xorg-video-ati.

After doing so and rebooting I had as with Feisty my radeon driver working with or without compiz with metacity decorator ; it looks even faster than proprietary driver "fglrx" which might not be still true with the new Catalyst drivers not yet packaged ; kde decoartor does not work cleanly but it can be used.

So you can definetely close my bug report ; sorry again but by principle I trust the package installator.
