Bug Description

It started happening after upgrading to ubuntu 12.04. Several times a day, the gnome session crashes and drops me to GDM. This happens with Unity and gnome shell.

OK, I am still trying to figure out what triggers this bug. Now it happened when I was working with gnome-terminal and evince. I was not able to get a X backtrace according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing:

I have installed the debugging versions of xserver-xorg-core-dbg, libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-dbg and rebooted.

I tried
$ sudo service apport start force_start=1
start: Job is already running: apport
But apport doesn't report anything after logging back.

I don't have another machine available to try the remote debugging. However, I tried to attach gdb to Xorg from text console, which just froze the system after entering "cont" in gdb.

I didnt find any core dump in /etc/X11/core. The /var/crash doesnt contain relevant information either.

There is also another problem related to this bug: After the first crash, the alt+ctrl+f1 stops working. The graphics output just switches off (monitor reports "no signal") instead of switching to text console. I need to reboot to make it work again. This makes the debugging a bit more difficult.

Stepan Roucka (rouckas) wrote :

The problem happened again a while ago... I found a post in a forum
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11917028&postcount=2
where the user reports similar problems (crashes and black screen instead of console) caused by the nvidia driver. So I removed the nvidia drivers. So far the only difference is, that switching to text console from X is instant --- it took several seconds before to switch back and forth. I will report again whether the crashes still occur.

I am now running with the nouveau drivers for almost three days without a crash - problem seems to be solved by removing nvidia drivers.

I believe I have developed a workaround

PLEASE READ ENTIRELY BEFORE EXECUTING

Open a terminal and do the following:

sudo apt-get install xserver-common=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10 xserver-xorg-core=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10

% this operation downgrades xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core. For me, the installed versions before downgrading were both 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.8

% The following packages were recommended when i tried downgrading xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core, so I installed them

sudo apt-get install xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi

% after this completes, reboot, then login and open a terminal and do:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

% then reboot one more time
DONE

I tried to do that in the mean time (using Alt F2), but no web browser in terminal, so couldn't finish it, and haven't been able to locate the report yet. .... Anyhow, I googled a little further and learned that compizconfig settings manager is a notorious culprit. So I did a compiz revert to standard followed by a unity --reset and uninstall of CCSM. And now it seems stable for quit some days....

Sorry if this is not the appropriate spot to put this comment, but hopefully it will be of use to someone else.

Same problem here running ATI Radeon - ATI Wrestler [Radeon HD 6310]
Ubuntu 12.04
Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci
Kernel modules: fglrx_updates, radeon

So it does not seem to be related to Nvidia.

This is happening to me running 12.10, kernel 3.5.0-26. I was using the Nvidia driver and thought switching to Nouveau might help but it was the same. So this does not seem to be an Nvidia related issue.
At least in my case I am thinking this could be a software reaction to faulty hardware: I am running on an XPS m1530 and for a while even the BIOS POST was not visible. The screen was lit, but remained black. It seems to be starting again, but now I get fatal IO errors showing up in /var/log/syslog and get booted out to GDM. Just before this happens the screen either freezes, goes all blocky or gets crazy rainbow colored banding.

Another datapoint for consideration.

My former note that the system is stable now is not correct.
Meanwhile I was able to file a new report by executing the following in a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg
It was filed under https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1161102
So please ati radeon xpress 200m users subscribe to that bug if you have it.
My current workaround is using Unity-2d. It is stable for days now but a bit slow on the graphics unfortunately.

Seeing this with a fresh 12.04.4 64-bit installation using ATI graphics. Seems to be triggered by "changing user" and it frequently breaks VM operations. Typical syslog entry looks like this:

I have very similar problem on Solaris with Radeon card and driver.

I realize this bug is not for Solaris, but this is the only other reference I could find... and I am also a Ubuntu user ;)

I restarted my X session to open an xterm only. I was scared it could be a low-level driver bug
but then, it worked. so its only gnome related.

from that xterm, I could launch metacity and gnome-panel fine...

but as soon as I try to launch gnome-session, X crashed.

has the gnome team been advised for this bug?

gnome version is 2.30.2
videocard is ATI, not nvidia
