Update: this is not limited to Java apps, and in fact is not uniform across Java apps.

Netbeans (a swing java app) does not trigger the segfault.
Nevernote (a swing java app) does trigger it.
amdcccle does trigger it.
VLC triggers it.

yes I agree, java apps started in the usual way are working well.
At the moment I can trigger it executing java app from eclipse (that uses native gtk ui)

the problem is that a bug in libgtk (I suppose the problem is here if you say that vlc too triggers the issue) let the xserver crash!

I am also tempted to mark this as a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/650539 . The ArchLinux folks have already fixed that bug and the patches are making their way upstream. From what I've seen, the bug was experienced most by folks using xinerama but I don't think it was 100% necessary to be using Xinerama in order to experience it. Likewise it seems like QT apps were susceptible to triggering this, but I don't think it's exclusive to QT apps.

Martin Long (martin-longhome) wrote :

I don't think it is a duplicate. This appears to relate to ATI prop drivers, whereas the other relates to nVidia. The stack traces appear to be entirely different (ignoring the top 3 frames, which appear to relate to the backtrace itself), and triggers appear to be different. I'd suggest it best to leave this separated until it can be confirmed that they are the same issue. Otherwise there is a danger of it not being fixed.

Brian J. Cohen (brianjcohen) wrote :

Martin,

That is not true at all. There were a lot of nvidia users on that other bug (65039), but it's abundantly clear that the bug itself was in xserver-xorg-core and has nothing at all to do with Nvidia.

briancohen, you claim to have the same bug as jedioetzi however your backtraces don't match up. Maybe you're having some unrelated crash that just happens to also occur when starting java apps? The problem arised in 650539 is working with xinerama and I let crash X without xinerama.
Anyway I applied the patch of Jared Bunting but it not solved the crash.

Hey jedioetzi,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)
