So I'm now using Ubuntu 18.04 and I've installed this package...

Which seems uses this source package...

Which is this project I'm logging a bug against.
Basically if you install the standard 'hexchat' and 'hexchat-indicator' packages you'll find the indicator plugin gets loaded but does absolutely nothing.
Oddly the fix is this...
sudo mv /usr/share/
Not sure why, but I picked up this warning which made me think to try it...
** (hexchat:10682): WARNING **: 07:17:41.239: could not find the desktop file for 'hexchat.desktop'
