Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

Downloaded the 64bit desktop with Wubi from Ubuntu.com installed Ubuntu 10.10 in XP SP3, started ok 2.6.35-22, updated got a list with 2.6.35-25 as the default (top) and generic 2.6.35-25 reports... "root.disk does not exist" recovery mode for ...-25 is the same error, but scrolling down to 2.6.35-22 (or editing it back to ...-22) works fine. How do I fix it or change it to default to -22 until a fix is found? The editing changes are not saved if I do it from the boot options. I'm very new to Ubuntu/Linux, but MCSE for Windows.

I looked all over the web, user groups, did not find a solution. I want to let others use this system and another, but have to explain how to get it to boot for them.

Please supply more details about the error message. The message "The root.disk does not exist" is clearly incorrect, because you can still boot the older kernel. Is dropping you at a busybox prompt? This has been a fairly common problem with the post-install procedures resulting in a bad initrd.img - and I'd guess this is your problem.

In which case you can try regenerating it - boot with the -22 kernel and run:
sudo update-initramfs -k 2.6.35-25-generic -c

the error message EXACTLY SAYS (entire screen)

"ALERT! /host/Ubuntu/disks/root.disk does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)_”

This happened after clicking on the update which placed 2.6.35-25 as the default which was a few minutes after I finished installing 10.10 and it booted up then as 2.6.35-22 which will still boot if I scroll down to it!
Something in the update caused this as that is all I did!!!

I do not know what a initrd.img is! or any other commands or files in Ubuntu or Linux - just getting started.

That's odd. Did you specify '-k all'? Maybe you do have a problem with the root.disk. This is what I suggest - use this tool http://ext2read.blogspot.com/ to recover any important data you have off the root.disk, and then reinstall.

If you can't view the root.disk using that tool it may be corrupted in which case you can boot a live CD and fsck it as described in the wubi guide: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#How%20can%20I%20access%20my%20Wubi%20install%20and%20repair%20my%20install%20if%20it%20won't%20boot%3f (butdon't fsck it if you've already mounted it)

This is a windows install, on my wife's machine and I don't want to affect windows - is this the best way, I don't know what these commands do.
How about if I boot into windows (XP) and uninstall then reinstall. The only thing I have done in Ubuntu is update and install some video players so DVD's would work.

What is ext2read what does it do and where do I get it - what OS does it install on etc.
Later this week I want to install Win7 on a partition on mine machine and then Ubuntu on it's own drive and multi boot with 7, xp, Ubuntu in that order.
Any suggestions on that would be very helpful.

You misunderstood me. ext2read is only useful if you want to recover
important data before uninstalling/reinstalling Ubuntu. You said that there
is no important data, so there's no need to use it.

The attempt to repair it already failed, and the only other methods are
through chroot that are too involved for an install that has nothing of
value (if they even would work).

Before reinstalling Ubuntu using Wubi I recommend defragmenting Windows.
