Bug Description

I was attempting to install xubuntu 10.04 via wubi on my parents laptop. I had a copy of xubuntu 10.04 already downloaded so I placed it in the same directory as wubi.exe. wubi failed to use the .iso file and downloaded a new one. Upon inspection of the log file, wubi did find the xubuntu.iso file however it detected an incorrect version 10.04.1 != 10.04?. It seems that xubuntu does not have a release of 10.04.1 only ubuntu and wubi does not see the difference.

The same thing happens with the Netbook edition which is also at 10.04 still. Users report that wubi.exe downloads the full .iso, then checks it and when it detects the version mismatch, it starts downloading the same image again.

Correction could be to either release 10.04.1 in all supported releases or to change wubi.exe to be accept 10.04 to be valid for 10.04.1 (especially since wubi.exe is fully downloading 10.04).

The workaround is to download the 10.04 version of wubi.exe (although this isn't available on the download mirrors in the 10.04 netbook edition download directory) or to burn the .iso to CD or USB.

However, many users use the inbuilt wubi.exe download logic, and it's not clear to them why it is failing.

The first link reports that the wubi installer downloaded the netbook 10.04 image 3 times, then checks that it's not 10.04.1 and rejects it. This seems like a relatively easy fix for a wubi developer (Evan?) and since ubuntu.com is still offering wubi.exe at release 10.04.1 it's still affecting users.

Maybe the easiest fix is just to update ubuntu.com to have wubi.exe for 10.10.

PS.
To install 10.04 netbook or xubuntu, use http://people.canonical.com/~evand/wubi/lucid/wubi-r189.exe
To install 10.10 (any version) use http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/wubi.exe

Or, burn the .iso you want to CD and run it from there

Thanks. The .iso approach doesn't do the cool wubi-thing where Ubuntu
is running in a large file under Windows and is uninstallable, does it?

@sflitman,
Wubi - windows ubuntu installer - can be run from a CD under windows, or using wubi.exe and the .iso in the same folder under windows, or just wubi.exe alone. They all result in the same "wubi-thing" that can be uninstalled.

Beware: there are some serious issues with grub at the moment on Wubi installs. Avoid any update to packages grub-pc or grub-common unless you know for a fact that it's required and bug 610898, bug 609815, and bug 653134 are fixed.

I forgot bug 682337 - this is the one that is about grub updates breaking a fresh 10.04.1 install. (610898 and 609815 I listed before are likely the same issue).
