12:03 <cjwatson> evand: looks like wubi is trying to use 'elif' and that doesn't exist in grub2
12:03 <evand> ah, thanks for the tip
12:04 <cjwatson> it appears that you have to chain if ...; then ... else if ...; then ...; fi; fi
12:04 <cjwatson> (i.e. there's nothing to arrange for the number of 'fi's at the end to be collapsed)
12:11 <slangasek> evand, cjwatson: what's the scope of the bug, then? wubi broken for all cases in alpha 5?
12:12 <evand> I'm a bit surprised that there's a syntax error at all. I'm running a test right now with the latest wubi and a slightly out of date CD (27th) and it's working fine
12:12 <slangasek> (we could consider an ISO-only reroll to pick up a new wubi, if it becomes available and if there's time for another round of testing)
12:14 <cjwatson> I'm confused that it ever worked with grub2
12:14 <cjwatson> maybe you get away with it if it happens to find the configuration file in the first location?
12:14 <cjwatson> (which is /ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/grub.cfg)
12:15 <evand> hrm, probably.
12:15 <evand> I do see your point about the syntax though
12:15 <evand> I'll make that change and push out a new wubi, then investigate why I'm not hitting this bug

:16 <cjwatson> fwiw the way I tracked it down was to run grub-emu and type the commands from data/wubildr.cfg into that
12:17 <cjwatson> I was too tired last night to think of that
12:18 <evand> noted :)

Is there a way to get the fix without waiting for the next wubi release?

I've had the same problem with my machine. I tried to install through wubi and had the same problem. In my experience I've found installing straight from the live CD worked or installing from a USB startup disk. So that could be an option until the the final release is launched.
