wubi doesn't run on windows XP

wubi won't even open.
wubi on cd-rom doesn't run either
when the computer was rebooted with live CD wubi runs but doesn't have the option of 'install ubuntu inside windows'

I'm having a similar problem (don't know if it's the same as original report since there's not much info there, but the title sounds just right).

I'm on winxp sp3, trying to run wubi from a usb stick containing the ubuntu netbook remix image, which comes with wubi.exe in the root directory. The image itself is ok (no errors found during check, and it boots from usb with no problem). However, when I run wubi.exe, nothing happens. More specifically, I looked at the task manager and saw a process named pyrun.exe as well as another temp-named process with 'py' in it, they start and then die off silently after a second or two, and that's it, nothing happens, no message or error or display of any kind.

I found the wubi log file, which showed the following error (there are no additional log lines after these):

little update: I downloaded the latest wubi (rev129) to replace the previous one, and got the same error and stack trace.

Maybe someone can offer a workaround until this is fixed?

another small update: just noticed there are a whole bunch of pyl??.tmp.exe files left over in the temp dir which are not deleted when the installer crashes - another little bug.

Also, I've found forum messages which sound like the same problem (e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1171021), which say this affects Vista and Windows 7 as well.

It actually smells like a configuration parse error or something similar, coupled with missing error handling (no notification and no cleanup).

I have the same problem. Wubi version 8.10 will work on my installation of XP+SP3 but no release after that does anything at all.
