Michael, you'll have to restore menu.lst manually. Take away the "rootflags=.." stuff on the "# kopt" line, and run "sudo update-grub".

b@z and eduardotv, does it help if you add "rootflags=locale=fr_FR.utf8" (or pt_BR.utf8) to the kernel line? You can try it out temporary by editing the kernel line in the grub menu when you boot your computer.
