Bug Description

Initially I encountered the issue reported with Bug #1164748. Then it somehow worked and I presumed that this was due to a Windows service fix update but the day thereafter the same problem reappeared.

I then have been experimenting in the hope I can overcome the issue with reinstalling, reconfiguring Windows etc. However with no joy. However I'm now getting an error whereas before I didn't get an error but WinConn was not doing what it was supposed to do. Therefore I'm creating this new bug as it might have a different cause than the one reported with Bug #1164748.

When I now try to an application with WinConn, it shows the error "Unknown return code -11" at the bottom of the WinConn connection panel but nothing happens.

Then I went on to install FreeRDP by following the instructions provided on http://appguppy.blogspot.se/2012/01/how-to-setup-freerdp-from-linux-ubuntu.html and to my surprise I was able to open the CMD window by using the "xfreerdp" command. This indicates to me that the WinConn problem is related to WinConn itself, rather than due to a VirtualBox and/ or Windows host misconfiguration.

Versions:
- Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (running within VirtualBox)
- Host machine is Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit
- WinConn installed by following instruction provided on http://stanev.org/winconn/

- Free RDP un-installed via Ubuntu Software Centre (version freerdp-x11 1.0.1-1ubuntu7) and then compiled/ installed by following the instructions provided on http://appguppy.blogspot.se/2012/01/how-to-setup-freerdp-from-linux-ubuntu.html

Please see attached screen recoding, which shows the issue reproduced.

Thanks for thorough explanation and video in the bug report.
It seams you are using newer version of freerdp, which is currently not supported by WinConn.
Please revert to stock freerdp, provided by distribution and try to disable some of the switches.
Latest freerdp has many enchantments and I will add support for it for sure, but currently I really can't work on it because of my daytime job preoccupation :(

I was on the verge of giving up but after your response I thought to give it another try. It works now and I hope it will continue to do so the years to come...

Below are the steps performed:
1. Un-installed the manually compiled and installed version of FreeRDP by using the command
$ sudo xargs rm < install_manifest.txt
2. Run "which xfreerdp" to see that FreeRDP was not found any more
$ which xfreerdp
3. By using Ubuntu Software Centre, removed WinConn
4. By using Ubuntu Software Centre, installed WinConn again

I presume you can close this bug as resolved. :-)
