errors 5 and 1117 on writing SD card

AMD Phenom II X 4 955 processor
64 bit OS
SSD 489Gb 198Gb free
SD cards 8Gb Sandisk SDHC
Multiple Slot reader USB 2.0
I am getting either error 5 or error 1117 on trying to write a Raspbian OS image for a Raspberry Pi. I have run with administrator privileges and without. I have tried inserting the reader with and without card before and after starting the software. Nothing seems to make any difference. The cards are all new and I have ordered a new reader just in case. Advice please on course of action, my RPi is dead in the water without an OS!
