Bug Description

I have started playing with the campaign maps using IrfanView, so that we can generate any resolution that we want in the future. I have modeled 1 island for Empire, what do you think about the style?

I would like to simulate different styles for the different tribes:

Barbarians: painted cowhide or vellum
Empire: chiseled marble
Atlanteans: silk painting
Frisians: ?

That´s a good idea :)

The example map looks a bit abstract in my opinion though. The surface of the island is too regular, especially compared to the very uneven surroundings. Also I´d give the marble a lighter colour, as the empire´s buildings use almost white marble. And the lines for the trees etc could be lowered into the surface to give them also a chiselled appearance. The general concept is nice :)

Are you planning to have a map for atlanteans anytime soon? I guess it wouldn´t make sense to have one as long as there is only one scenario.

For frisians, we could have a map in the style of old land- and sea-maps, like this: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%B6hr#/media/File:Historische_Karte_von_den_Nordfriesischen_Inseln_-_Franz_Geerz_1888-2_(cropped_F%C3%B6hr).jpg

I have tied and failed to give the trees etc. a chiseled appearance - would the style of the text be good for that? I'll try to find out how to create the same effect on elements that are not text then.

As to the island background and marble texture, I guess we would need some post-processing in GIMP there. The marble effect takes up a huge amount of processing power, so it would make sense to have a separate layer anyway. we could then make the island semi-transparent to have it shine through.

I have no plans to create an Atlantean map at this time - we currently have a very beautiful background image for the first scenario. Having a map will make sense for follow-up scenarios though, so I'd like to have a map style in place.

Yes, the text style would fit for the trees too. It wouldn´t really matter if this doesn´t work for non-text though, because GIMP offers some great editing features there.
I took the liberty to edit your map with GIMP a bit. I added a semi-transparent marble overlay to the island, worked on the trees´ edges, and made the letters less sharply pronounced, and everything is brighter and shot through with reddish marble veins. The background could still do with some flattening here. What do you think of this?

Yes, that looks pretty good :)

When I next work on this, I'll see about replicating as much of this as I can in Inkscape - it's best to have a less complicated procedure.

One of the motivations for me doing this is that we could have the texts as separate overlays eventually, making the maps translatable :)
