blinky cursor on first boot

Bug Description

the very first time it boots, it seems to hang a long time on blinky cursor. the next boot went fast...

if you hit ctrl-alt-f1 the screen says:

[0.000] ACPI error message of some sort
Loading...

Then nothing. You can hit enter. Nothing, but the cursor does move. If you type any text, then hit enter, it boots. The next time, it'll boot normally. Weird.

we need to try turning off "quiet" in the syslinux conf to see if there's an error message we're supressing

ok, i booted with "quiet" off...it happens right on "loading root filesystem". it just sits there...

then you hit enter, and nothing. you hit a (any key) and then enter, and then it says "Done." and loads the init-bottom script and keeps going....weird.
