cannot connect to open WiFi network

Wicd 1.7.2.3 on Ubuntu 12.04.

Cannot get IP address for WiFi networks with no security.

This problem has been plaguing me for a long time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you certain the network is open? Attempting to connect to a network that requires authentication, but without configuring any, will fail when getting the IP address.

Are you sure your device is allowed to connect? Networks with filters on allowed devices will fail to offer an IP.

Can you connect to these networks by other means? Which DHCP external program is Wicd trying to use?

I am sure the network is open since I can connect with my phone, perfectly.
This occurs for nearly every open wifi network. I say nearly, because, for
example, at McDonald's the world over Wicd succeeds. I do not know what
makes a network connectable or not. But as I said, a huge majority of the
open networks are un-connectable

The DHCP client is set to "automatic".

Here is today's /var/log/wicd/wicd.log for a SUCCESSFUL connection to a WP
protected WiFi network
