According to the GEDCOM specifications, you use

"quotes" to indicate a nickname
asterisk* to indicate a prefered given name - which is underlined.

If I understand correctly, a rufname is a prefered given name. So, you should use the asterisk (not quotes).

e.g. in this name,

1 NAME Johannes Frederich* "Freddy" /Schmidt/

Frederich is the rufname and Freddy is the nickname.

The option "underline name in quotes" (which was inherited from PGV) simply confuses these two things.
I would vote to remove this option completely.

I do not know what they want to completely remove?

I've placed an asterisk, have only set the official name in "quotes" and registered a nickname.

I cannot reproduce this problem.

@klemens - do you still have the problem in the latest SVN code?

@klemens - we want to remove the configuration option << underline name in quotes >>.

Here is an example

1 NAME John Paul* "chalky" /WHITE/

The asterisk should indicate a prefered name - this is always underlined.

The quotation marks should indicate a nickname. It is wrong to underline these.

Looking at the attached image example, I m sure Klemens was using quotes incorrectly, but has since corrected this (#4). So the bug is invalid, but we still need to decide about removing the "underline names in quotes" option. There might be a few users who will object, but the logic for removing it is a good one, so I think we should go ahead and do it.

I concur with the logic to remove. It is not in sync with the standard nor in the manner we have designed to display the name idiosyncrasies. If a vote is solicited, mine is Yes, remove.
